Day 4: Hammerhead shark dive

Day 4: Hammerheads Koro Sun: Today was the day! Compliments of Dave and Jenna as a graduation gift for our masters program we had a little "funny money" to do something cool with. (vinaka vaka levu- thanks so much guys!!!) We figured diving with hammerheads was a pretty great way to spend a day. We set out on a 20 minute cab ride to Koro Sun- a gorgeous resort on the other, and prettier side of the island. We were greeted by Blyh who was the most mature 9 year old we ever met. He was manning the dive shop as his parents were out diving. He gave us a tour of resort and we played some hopscotch while we waited for what was probably a no-go in terms of seeing the hammerheads. It was predicted to be too rough. We were disappointed, but trying to hold onto hope. The dad Colin returned and made no promises, with the disclaimer that they did not see any for the past several days, but that he was willing to take us. It was choppy, the very rough seas reminded us of our failed shark dive in Honduras, when we got left in the dust by the guide to be chum in the water. So, out we went. Into the deep blue depths to try and spot this magical creature. Cynthia and Cristina, the swedish and canadian girls, were the heroes of the day spotting the first school of sharks at a distance. There must have been 10 of them. We left half the group with the girls to swim after them. We missed that group, but saw another school much closer up. We were screaming through our regulators! As if that wasn't good enough, we then found a third school of about 12 that were right up close. We were legitimately diving among them. It was amazing, indescribably really. Unfortunately, they were deeper than our camera could go, so you have to take our word for it. BTW, the iPad is not all it's cracked up to be. Even Georgeann, the minimalist, weight worrier agrees, we should have totally brought the MacBook! Scary reentry. Christiana fell off front of boat but handled it like champ. We are super excited so we rode back to Copra Shed, our stomping grounds of Savusavu, to celebrate. We got the usual. Amy really likes the samosa and I loved the garlic chili fries. We headed back to hotel to cool off in the pool. We met a nice family and shared what we had learned, which always makes you feel like you were a part of something when you do that. We watched the subset and headed back to town. We happily ran into Dave and Chris and changed our plans to go to curry night. Instead we followed them to surf and turf. Had amazing snapper, honey ginger pumpkin soup, and creeps with ice cream. We split it but they gave us two soups and desserts. Sweet family that runs it. The daughter and the daughter of the cruise owner that we were gong on served us. So cute. Had great conversation and headed home in taxi. It was a great day. Kenny was of course there to say goodnight. Off to the Tui-Tai tomorrow and can't wait. Have heard only great things about it.
